"After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world." Philip Pullman.

The great hunt of the mastodon told around the campfire, cuneiforms stamped into tiles of clay, illuminated manuscripts, print books, ebooks, twitterature—the form changes but not the content. Mankind has always told itself stories and everyone has a story to tell, no matter the format.

The Art of Storytelling is the theme of this year’s 11th International Women’s Fiction Festival held in Matera, Italy, from September 25-28. The entire Festival will be dedicated to this delicate yet powerful art, the art of turning life events into stories, the art of turning random events into tales that resonate with readers.

The writers’s conference of the 2014 WFF will, as usual, host agents, editors and publishing professionals, providing a wide overview of the fast changing world of international publishing.
This year there will be a special focus on self publishing/indie publishing, where the writers control all aspects of the stories they tell. “The full panoply of possibilities open to writers will be on view at the 14th WFF,” says Elizabeth Jennings. “Writers from all over the world will meet and listen to publishing professionals—but will also listen to themselves. Friday the 26th of September will be Independence Day, an entire day dedicated to indie publishing, with writers such as Bella Andre, Tina Folsom, Debra Holland on hand to talk about their indie journey.” In the afternoon, a special forum will be made available for those who are indie publishing and those who are interested in this exciting new avenue—the UnConference. An unscripted forum for the exchange of information and for networking.

The Festival will have a number of acquiring editors and agents looking for new clients: Monique Patterson, executive editor at St. Martin’s Press, US agents Ann Colette and Christine Witthohn and UK agent Andrew Lownie. The Festival will also have Jason Ojalvo, of Audible ACS, the audiobook arm of Amazon, digital publishing experts Jane Friedman and David Gaughran and film producer Marilyn Atlas. Italian agents and editors: Alice Di Stefano, author of ‘Publisher’ and editor at Fazi Editore, Gemma Trevisani, editor at Rizzoli, Francesca Lang, editor at Piemme and Giulia Ichino, editor at Mondadori.
The WFF celebrates the fact that there has never been a better time to be a writer.
See you in Matera!
