AGENT AND EDITORS – WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR - WFF 2011

USA – EDITORS:
SUSAN SWIFT – ETIOPIA
Etopia Press is currently looking for the best, most unique, most well-crafted stories out there -- and we know they're out there. Traditional genre fiction, non-traditional or cross-genre fiction, general and literary fiction -- there's no limit to where a writer's imagination can go when he or she is inspired, and there's always a reader who wants to go along for the ride.

What We're Publishing
Electronic and print books in all genres. The future of publishing is in emerging electronic markets and media, and we specifically want to pursue them. But we also want to make books available in trade paperback for authors and readers who just like them better that way.
What We're Looking For:
Traditional Genres
: Fantasy, Urban fantasy, Science Fiction, Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Action, Horror, Historical, Erotica and Romance -- all subgenres, all heat levels from sweet to erotic, including ménage and poly, BDSM, fetish, etc. I'd love more urban fantasy, horror, erotic romance, and M/M romance.

Non-traditional or Cross-Genres: Historical sci-fi, erotic thrillers, paranormal mysteries… you get the idea. Will all non-traditional ideas work? Probably not. Will we accept anything just because it's "different?" Nope. But if you can make it work, and make us stay up too late at night reading it, you'll probably keep other readers up late, too.
General Fiction and Literary Fiction: If you write this, you know what it is.   We'd love more longer works in these categories.
Young Adult: We're looking for young adult books in all the above categories (except erotic, obviously). We're looking for stories that speak to teens and young adults and the challenges they face in today's world, whether the story is contemporary, fantasy, historical, or something else. No preachy, dogmatic, or goodie-two-shoes stories (unless the story is about the trials and tribulations of being a goodie-two-shoes in a world full of street gangs, werewolves or Russian mafia).
LGBT: We happily and proudly accept and encourage LGBT works in all the above traditional, non-traditional, general, literary, and YA categories.
Interracial, Multicultural, BBW, etc: People come in all colors, shapes, sizes, creeds, sexual orientations, cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds… the list goes on. Stories with these elements won't be segregated into their own line but will be included in all the above traditional, non-traditional, general, and literary categories. I'd love to see more IR/MC/BBW/OWYM.

ANSELM ASTON
ATTICA BOOKS
We’re looking to build up active lists in fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction, including but not limited to: epic fantasy, science fantasy, space opera, historical fantasy, alternate history, historical, and historical crime. Wit, whimsy and humour are welcome, as are great sweeping epics (and if the two can be combined, so much the better). We’re after books which are, above all, a joy to read.

Things we probably aren’t the right place for include: vampires, werewolves, mean city streets, and anything which might be promoted as ‘brutal’, ‘violent’, ‘gritty’ or ‘unflinching’.

JESSICA LEEKE – SIMON & SCHUSTER

I’m looking to acquire literary fiction, women’s fiction for reading groups, and historical fiction. I’m looking particularly for fiction with a strong narrative and believable characters. Non-fiction hooks are fabulously useful at the moment, for example I’m searching for a vivid historical novel set during World War I to tie-in with the anniversary. I’d also love to publish a novel or memoir about food and cooking, a passion of mine!

RUTH TROSS – HODDER

Ruth Tross is editor of Mulholland Books, a new imprint for Hodder & Stoughton which launched in May 2011. Mulholland works in partnership with a sister company in the US, and aims to publish the best suspense fiction, including crime novels, thrillers and spy stories, and to find the most exciting new writers in this market.

I am looking for psychological suspense, political thrillers, ‘reading group crime’ where the focus is on regular people rather than police, and also enjoys novels with elements of SF, fantasy or horror. Above all, I want to acquire well-written and compelling stories, with engaging characters and page-turning action.

GIULIA ICHINO – MONDADORI
Very literary fiction, entertaining novels and specific genres such as noir, classical mysteries, historicals, and ‘women’s fiction’ in the broadest sense of the term.
